Avignon is situated in the south of France in the county of Vaucluse part of the Provence region. The city is located at the confluence of la Durance river and the Rhône river.
The city is nicknamed the "city of the Popes" because of the presence of the Popes between 1309 and 1423 and is one of the rare city of France to be completely fortified by a wall.
